Skyespace

Another stage in the collaboration with John Purser, was facilitated through hiring Skyespace at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. Although it is normally used as a television and radio facility it proved perfect for our purpose; creating a mock up of the exhibition installation. The scale of the studio allowed us all to experience the work at its full size and we were able to place it in situ by mapping out the An Lanntair floor plan. It was an extremely useful exercise; raising questions around the installation that can only happen as you are physically in amongst it, no matter how well you feel you’ve thought things through in advance.

Creating the mock up gave John a clear insight to the visual aspect of the installation and allowed time for him to respond with his ideas for the sound composition. It is always fascinating to watch someone’s creative process at play and John’s passion for his work is legendary. It was a great way to spend the weekend before heading to Lewis for the first of the public workshops.

Situated within the Fàs building at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Skyespace is a versatile venue for visual artists wanting to try out ideas on a large scale and Alasdair MacKay who runs the project provided excellent support.
